We present an overview of the second XMM-Newton slew catalogue, XMMSL2, which contains 72000 raw detections from 65000 square degrees. We explore the
characteristics of the variable source population, dominated by flares from low-mass stars and some very soft spectrum sources - the rubies - composed
of novae, high-variability AGN and tidal disruption events.
