The XMM-Newton Survey Science Centre (XMM-SSC) was selected by the European Space Agency (ESA) to ensure that the scientific community can exploit the data accumulated by the ESA cornerstone mission, the XMM-Newton X-ray observatory. The SSC has responsibilities within the XMM-Newton project in four main areas namely 1) the compilation of the XMM-Newton Serendipitous Source Catalogue, 2) the follow-up/identification programme for the XMM-Newton serendipitous X-ray sky survey: the XID Programme, 3) the pipeline processing of all XMM-Newton observations, 4) The development of science analysis software for XMM-Newton. The main focus of the SSC today is the catalogue production and it is this subject that is the topic of this meeting.
